What is a mental health crisis? Some examples of potential issues that might be described as a mental health crisis are as follows:

Please note this list is not exhaustive of possible scenarios. If you feel you or a loved one are having a mental health crisis and need help, please seek help, regardless of whether you meet any of these conditions.

  • You or a loved one have attempted suicide in the last 72 hours.

  • You or a loved one are having suicidal thoughts, have a method, plan, and/or intent and you are afraid you or they will act on them.

  • You are worried you or a loved one might hurt someone else or are behaving in a way that is potentially dangerous to you or others.

  • You or a loved one are experiencing a severe manic episode.

  • Psychosis (hearing things other people don't hear, seeing things that may not be there, experiencing delusional thinking that other people say is not consistent with reality, or severe paranoia).

  • You or a loved one are having withdrawal symptoms from suddenly stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opiates. You may need to participate in a medically supervised detox program, as it can be dangerous (or lethal) to suddenly stop heavy alcohol or benzodiazepine use, and very uncomfortable to suddenly stop using opiates.

  • You or a loved one are self-harming.

  • You or a loved one are unable to complete basic activities of daily living, such as eating, sleeping, showering, caring for self or children, etc due to poor mental health.
